Lack of affordable housing was the #1 issue that surfaced during MACG’s 2015 Listening Campaign and continues to be a critical issue in Portland, impacting income and racial diversity, and contributing to unaffordable rent increases for too many Portlanders.
On February 2nd, Portland City Council will hold a hearing on an extraordinary draft emergency ordinance to require landlords to pay moving costs of any tenant they evict for “no cause” or if they raise the rent by 10% or more within a 12-month period.
This is an emergency measure that should be enacted to ease the burden on tenants of skyrocketing rents and no-cause evictions until wider state-wide work can occur to change landlord-tenant laws.
It is time for us once again to WEAR RED and fill City Hall chambers in support of this emergency ordinance!
MACG members will be telling stories of housing dislocation as testimony in support of the ordinance.
In addition, we are asking you to send an email to Commissioners Fish (email@example.com), Saltzman (firstname.lastname@example.org), and particularly Fritz (email@example.com) urging them to approve the relocation assistance ordinance.
