Listening Leads to Five Research Action Teams

Last winter and spring, MACG held a formal listening campaign, asking our member institutions to find out what problems were concerning our community and where they might be willing to work. On April 28th, we held a Next Directions Assembly to discern what were the most broadly felt issues and where we had the most motivated leaders. There was strong turnout: 20 of the 25 MACG member institutions were represented and over 100 MACG leaders attended. From that process, leaders settled on five research action teams focused on the top issue areas. Here is what each team has been up to:

October, 2018 - Stan Aschenbrenner, member of Lake Oswego United Methodist Church, and longtime MACG leader died on August 11th at the age of 89. Stan brought commitment, passion, warmth and wisdom to our work, always inspiring our gatherings with his thoughtful and motivating remarks and his tireless action. Reclaiming Rights in the Face of Injustice: 60 People Trained. More to Come

July 2018 -- The Sound Alliance Immigrant Rights Action Team only set up 40 chairs at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Federal Way on June 21, 2018. Then 60 people piled into the room, filling it to capacity to hear Jay Stansell, J.D. present a workshop entitled “Reclaiming the Constitution. Knowing, Defending, and Using Your Rights in the Face of Injustice.”

MACG the seed for statewide WIN on debt relief for former prisoners

December 2017 -- In our end of the year MACG news round-up we sent last week, we forgot to mention one important win: Gov. Kate Brown signed SB 360 into law in July, which allows former prisoners to pay some court-related fees back through performing community service. Sen. Lew Frederick agreed to introduce the bill after hearing stories PHOENIX Rising Transition members told about post-prison financial burdens at the 2015 MACG listening campaign.

August 2017 -- On August 12th, in Charlottesville, Virginia, white supremacists, neo-Nazis, and anti-Semites organized a hate-filled show of force against the African American community, communities of color, religious minorities, immigrants, and their allies. They killed one and injured many. The Sound Alliance unequivocally condemns these hate groups and their actions. In a 21st century democratic society, there is no place for such racist, anti-Semitic, anti-Muslim, anti-immigrant bigotry.

Progress! Mental Health Crisis Stabilization Facility Gets Green Light

July 2017 -- Congratulations are in order for the Spokane Alliance's Public Safety & Mental Health Research Action Team! After three years of the team's work researching and promoting the idea with partner organizations, key leaders, and government agencies, the Spokane Regional Law and Justice Council voted to approve a plan to build a Mental Health Crisis Stabilization Facility in 2018. The facility will also be a win for Spokanites who suffer from mental illness.
