Our diversity is a strength: leaders win endorsements for Best Starts for Kids from Labor, Federal Way School Board

July, 2015 -- Sound Alliance leaders have won two endorsements supporting the Alliance’s campaign to get the Best Starts for Kids levy passed in November - one delivered by a church lay-leader in South King County and one from a labor leader in Seattle.

Best Starts for Kids Campaign Launches - Train the Briefer Sessions Set

June, 2015 -- If passed this November, the Best Starts for Kids levy would fund programs to help ensure that every child in King County has the opportunity to reach his or her full potential in life. Sound Alliance member institutions committed to briefing over 4,000 people before October about Best Starts for Kids. Kellie Fitzgerald, grocery worker and member of UFCW Local 1439, speaks of the distraction from productivity when a worker is sick or worried about a sick child at home. "My job requires focusing on good customer service, ringing orders efficiently and accurately, I take pride in what I do. However if I'm worrying about my child's fever, thinking, "is he getting enough fluids?" – I’m unable to give my job my full attention."

Over 600 Participate in MACG-wide Listening Campaign. Discernment Assembly this Monday!

May, 2015 -- The results are in! Over half of MACG's member institutions held 37 listening events and listened to over 600 people during the course of the MACG-wide 2015 listening campaign! The next task is to take what we heard and discern the issue areas that will engage the most new leaders and have the biggest positive impact on the community, which we will do at Monday's Discernment Assembly.

Civic Academy Report: Budget 101 and a Vision for our Community

April, 2015 -- On Monday, April 13, twenty people from five Sound Alliance institutions came together for the first Civic Academy on how Washington funds state and local services. There was great energy in the room as participants got clarity on the where the state’s revenue comes from and where it goes (expenses). Participants were especially interested to discuss the disparity in the amount of revenue that comes in and how it gets collected versus the amount of services that need funding.

Story of a True Broad-Based Organizing Win: How health students ran a great campaign, then joined two issues together with labor leaders to create a win on both

April, 2015 -- The Health Equity Circle at the University of Washington (UW) and the Sound Alliance are celebrating a major win: On March 30, the Seattle City Council unanimously passed an ordinance supporting the creation of three new tent cities, providing much needed safe, temporary shelters for those experiencing homelessness. A similar ordinance failed a few years ago. In the final hour of this campaign, the health students joined across the broad-base with labor leaders in other Sound Alliance institutions to score a win on two issues - homelessness and fair trade - that are ultimately related.

Spokane Alliance Introduces Paid Sick, Safe & Leave Policy at Packed Press Conference

March, 2015 -- Over 70 Spokane Alliance members, as well as representatives from a broad coalition of 60 businesses and community organizations, filled the dining area in front of the new Common Crumb Bakery on Main Street on Tuesday, March 31 to introduce a Paid Sick, Safe & Family Leave draft policy covering all Spokane workers, and to call on City Council to pass an ordinance based on that policy.
