Workshops Developing: What are your concerns for you and your community?

June, 2016 -- As the Sound Alliance we want to understand how our member institution’s top issues of concern could be affected by the negotiations our legislators will have in Spring 2017 about funding basic education and other services in our state. This Spring, Alliance leaders have been busy doing research actions with experts in each field with the goal of developing one hour long workshops that will show how these negotiations will affect each issue of concern to our community.

The Sound Alliance would like to wish a warm welcome to two new member institutions - Washington Federation of State Employees Local 304 and Interpreters United Local 1671, WFSE/AFSCME Council 28. In addition the Sound Alliance is recognizing the service of two top leaders - Board President Jonathan Knapp, and Reverend James Kubal-Komoto as they transition to new positions.

At Standing Room Only Assembly, Legislators Agree to Work with Alliance on Fair Budget

February, 2016 -- At a standing-room only Action Assembly on February 20 at the University of Washington, 130 Sound Alliance members and allies demonstrated that everyone has a role to play when it comes to important decisions about how to fund the state services we rely on. As part of the All In For Washington campaign, which aims to make Washington’s budget fairer, leaders told stories demonstrating the impact on their lives when there is no money for essential state services and programs.

A win for a healthier and more equitable Spokane

January, 2016 -- On January 11th the Spokane City Council voted 6-1 to pass a Sick and Safe Leave Policy, on the 22nd Mayor Condon vetoed it, and three days after that the city council overrode the mayor's veto. Over 180 people turned out in support of Sick and Safe Leave on the night of the initial vote with over 30 prepared testimonies from many different perspectives. We, the Spokane Alliance and our allies, were able to pass a strong policy for Spokane and succeeded in getting a stronger policy than most jurisdictions across the country.

Best Starts for Kids WIN! Voters Approve Measure

November, 2015 -- Congratulations! With a majority of the ballots counted, Best Starts for Kids was approved with 56% of the vote! By approving the levy, King County voters are supporting increased resources to ensure kids reach their full potential in life. The hard work and dedication of Sound Alliance members who have spent the last months training, briefing, talking to their neighbors - over 3700 people briefed in total! - and continuously showing up for Best Starts for Kids has paid off with a great win.

October, 2015 -- In our training we teach that “power” is the ability to act. It’s the ability to get things done. There are two major ways to get big things done - with a lot of people or a lot of money - and in the Sound Alliance, our power is people power. One outstanding example of this theory in action comes from the Martin Luther King County Labor Council and local Building Trades unions who are member institutions of the Sound Alliance.

A Jail Diversion Facility in Spokane? - Alliance leaders explore solutions to Mental Health & Public Safety

October, 2015 -- While much focus this last spring and summer has been on the Spokane Alliance’s Sick and Safe Leave work, another team has been diligently making progress: the Mental Health & Public Safety Team. The team pulled together 18 months ago, specifically in response to the Spokane Alliance community’s concerns about hearing increased reports of the mentally ill being shot by police and seeing a rise in mentally ill participants in our churches’ emergency services.

Best Starts for Kids: Briefings underway plus ASSEMBLIES coming up soon!

September, 2015 -- Sound Alliance leaders are well on their way to the goal they set last Spring of briefing 4000 people about the Best Starts for Kids levy, which is on the ballot for this November. This summer, 65 leaders from various Sound Alliance member institutions got trained to lead 15 – 30 minute briefing sessions explaining the benefits of Best Starts for Kids to others in their organizations and community. Even though briefings just started, 650 people have already attended!

August, 2015 -- Members of MACG’s Affordable Housing Team and other MACG members made a big splash advocating for affordable housing at Tuesday’s public hearing at the Portland Housing Bureau. Our presence at the hearing was impressive, with over 35 MACG members in attendance from six institutions at a daytime meeting!

Health agency keeps commitment to Spokane Alliance, publishes report showing the importance of Earned Sick and Safe Leave

August, 2015 -- On June 24, 2014, the Spokane Regional Health District – Spokane City and County’s health department – committed in front of 250 Spokane Alliance members at Westminster UCC to develop a study on how a Sick, Safe & Family Leave Policy will impact Spokane. The District kept its commitment to the Spokane Alliance and has just published its report, entitled, “Paid Sick Leave in Spokane”. The report provides solid local data, including survey responses from over 3500 people in the district.
