Action Teams

Spokane Alliance's current action teams

Members of the Spokane Alliance identify problems, concerns and hopes in our communities.  Through our "Action Teams" we research, build relationships and act on these problems, concerns and hopes.  The results of these activities usually develop into our campaigns.

We usually have more than one active campaign at any given time.  The more we win, the stronger we get.

The issues we work on can be large or small, but must meet the following criteria:

  • They must make a difference in people's lives.
  • They must be specific, measurable and winnable.
  • They must help build our organization and move us forward.

All In For Washington

Chair: Mary Lou Johnson, Unitarian Universalist Church of Spokane

regional initiative of IAF Washington  - uniting the Spokane and Sound Alliances - the Budget and Policy Center, and other statewide allies, All In For Washington aims to engage 6,000 Washington state residents to make a collective judgement on financing for government services such as K-12 education, higher education, physical and mental health care, public safety, and the social safety net.

In January 2012, the Washington State Supreme Court issued a landmark ruling that could make life significantly better or worse for children and families across Washington State.  In a case called McCleary vs. State of Washington the Court found that the State Legislature was violating the constitutional rights of Washington’s school children by denying them the basic education promised to them through a lack of funding.  The Court has imposed a $100,000 per day fine on the Legislature for every day that these rights continue to be violated.

This has significant implications for every person in our State: Will our Legislature decide to take funding away that sustain other services, in order to meet the court’s mandate? Will the legislature approve new revenue sources which would allow funding for education to increase without decreasing funding for other services? What do Washington’s citizens actually want the Legislature to do?

The All In For Washington campaign will open the dialogue on revenue and budget reform by: listening to Spokane Alliance members to understand how the state budget affects our families, our neighborhood and our cities; meeting with local experts and people directly affected by problems to learn more about what is happening and what solutions might help; and making judgments about which potential solutions both fit with our values and are politically feasible.  We will then engage our elected officials in candidate forums and throughout the legislative session to share what we’ve learned and to work together to resolve this situation.
