Annual Meeting: What a Year!

Just outside the Spokane Alliance office after the annual meeting and celebration ... a good sign for the year ahead!

July, 2016

Spokane Alliance leaders gathered together on June 16 for our Annual Meeting, reviewing, celebrating and taking in lessons learned from a fabulous year of growth.

Officers - Thank You!

The meeting started with voting in new officers for our Administrative Team:

  • Co-Chair: Jason Benway, IBEW Local 73
  • Co-Chair: Karen Dorn-Steele, Unitarian Universalist Church of Spokane
  • Treasurer: John Little, Sheet Metal Workers Local 55
  • Secretary: Adriane Leithauser, Fuse

We expressed our gratitude to Jane Nelson-Low (Fuse), for her service as co-chair this past year and for taking on a new role as Spokane Alliance delegate to the IAF Northwest board!

Accomplishments and Lessons Learned

Jane gave an annual report summing up a great year for the Spokane Alliance. Some highlights (read a fuller version):

  • Passing a Sick and Safe Leave Ordinance that is being held up as a national model.
  • Launching an even bigger campaign targeting Washington state’s unfair revenue system.
  • Helping Spokane win a MacArthur grant to explore building a diversion center to support chronically mentally ill and addicted people.
  • Continuing to develop leaders in the health professions through the Health Equity Circle at many Spokane universities.
  • Supporting a preliminary movement to build an alliance in the Tri-Cities

We heard moving personal stories about the importance of the passage of the Sick and Safe Leave Ordinance from our members Nikki Lockwood (Fuse) and Scott Habenicht (UFCW Local 1439).

Carol Prichard, Lead Organizer, shared the main organizing lessons learned this year.  Number one: Focus and Consistency strengthened our power to act effectively and win.

Looking ahead

The assembled members approved the budget for the coming year. Thanks to John Little for his leadership on this.

We set a goal to increase our monthly personal donations.  We gained eight strong personal commitments at the meeting itself and will be looking for more.  Donate today to support the leadership development and effective civic action of Spokane Alliance!

Leaders voted to restart our Jobs Team in order to follow through on the success of the Apprenticeship Ordinance as it’s been implemented.

Celebration

Afterwards we had a wonderful celebration of our Sick and Safe Leave success and it ended with a full double rainbow outside our office.  We all thought it was a sign for a good year ahead :-)
