Delegate Assembly: Four Research Action Teams Ready to Go!

October 2017 -- In an energetic Delegate Assembly on September 21, attendees voted on a variety of action paths for the Spokane Alliance to pursue in the coming year.

October 2017

In an energetic Delegate Assembly on September 21, attendees voted on a variety of action paths for the Spokane Alliance to pursue in the coming year.

First, members present reflected on how leadership development helps strengthen institutions.  (Help build your own organization!  Send your members to our November Leadership Institute!)

Adriane Leithauser, Fuse Washington, reminded attendees of the outcomes of the Alliance’s three-month listening campaign and two research action team trainings this summer.

Based on the stories all of us heard, the top issues reported in the listening sessions, and the willingness of leaders to step up and run teams, the Executive / Strategy Team came prepared with a proposal of which issue teams the Alliance should support:

  • Health Care Action Team
  • Mental Health & Public Safety (restarting the previous team)
  • All in for Washington (team is already running)

Carolyn Holmes, Independent Grassroots, asked those present to consider building a team to act on Poverty, Homelessness & Housing.   Three people committed to take leadership on this team.   The proposal was immediately put to a vote of the larger membership.   Everyone was in support.

In summary, four official Research Action Teams were agreed to through the listening and discernment process and the consensus of members at this meeting!

See our events calendar or the “Upcoming Spokane Alliance Events” section below for the upcoming meetings of these teams.

If you or a member of your institution is interested in joining any of the teams please email Carol and she'll help connect you.

Two additional issues will be addressed through more informal teams:

  • Jobs – An ad hoc team formed to organize around the Responsible Bidders Ordinance at Spokane City Hall.  Contact is Rick Evans, Laborers Local 238.
  • Education – We are directing those interested in education issues to connect with Nikki Lockwood, Fuse Washington, and her efforts with the Every Student Counts Alliance.

Members Step into Leadership During Organizer's Family Leave

Spokane Alliance’s Lead Organizer, Carol Krawczyk-Prichard will be taking family leave within the next month.

The Alliance’s leadership has decided to draw from current organization leadership to cover Carol’s duties while she is away for the short-term, including hiring Sheila Collins, Fuse Washington, as a part-time interim coordinator and welcoming Jim Wavada, WFSE Local 1221 (retired),  as a dedicated clerical/technical volunteer.

Carol called on several delegates to share what they will be doing to help the Spokane Alliance during this transition and what makes the Alliance meaningful enough for them to want to invest their time and energy into sustaining it. A sampling:

  • Jason Benway, IBEW Local 73, noted that he feels the Alliance has helped him and members of his organization grow personally and professionally.  This growth gives him confidence that they can be effective in helping to move action agenda items forward.

  • Karen-Dorn Steele, Unitarian Universalist Church of Spokane, volunteered to co-chair the Admin Committee because she feels it’s a critical function that is sometimes overlooked.  She is passionate about the Alliance maintaining its momentum based on the many positive changes she has seen the Alliance introduce to the Spokane Community.

  • Andy CastroLang, Westminster Congregational United Church of Christ, noted her difficulties holding together an urban congregation in downtown Spokane and stated that “the Alliance saved me.”  She explained how the work of the Alliance made her feel that she and her congregation are part of something much larger and more meaningful than she had ever expected.

Congratulations to all delegates who attended the Assembly and made it a successful leadership event for the Alliance!
