This Weekend: Stand Up For Thriving Communities and Cleaning Up the Tax Code

March, 2017 -- Beginning this Saturday, March 11, legislators are coming home from Olympia for one reason: to hear from you at town halls across the state. With tough budget negotiations around the corner, these town halls are a vital opportunity to let our senators and representatives know that we can create great schools and protect our thriving communities here in Washington, but only if we clean up our upside-down tax code.

Beginning this Saturday, March 11, legislators are coming home from Olympia for one reason: to hear from you at town halls across the state.

With tough budget negotiations around the corner, these town halls are a vital opportunity to let our senators and representatives know that we can create great schools and protect our thriving communities here in Washington, but only if we clean up our upside-down tax code.

The Spokane Alliance is asking you and members from your institution to turn out and tell your senators and representatives: stand up to powerful special interests who have turned our state’s tax code upside down!

As part of the All in For Washington campaign, the Alliance's Action Team is putting together questions for the legislators and will designate leaders to ask them.  Here are some examples:

  1. Our kids deserve great schools that we can achieve if we clean up our tax code. But powerful special interests have manipulated our tax code by inserting tax breaks that benefit themselves – and take billions of dollars from our communities. We are one of only a few states with a tax break on capital gains, which are the sale of stocks and bonds. Will you support closing this tax break for powerful special interests so that we can fund our kids’ schools?

  2. I was shocked to learn that people making less than $20,000 a year pay a seven times larger percentage of their annual income than what people making over $500,000/year pay.  What action will you take to address our upside-down tax code where the poor pay seven times more than the powerful?

Join us at a Town Hall near you!
